Cars whiz by, drivers honk,
Cacophonous slee yip soar,
Guttural, spitting sounds arise,
Falling on concrete unable to hold their highs and lows
Pitched onto streets confettied with crumpled napkins
Clumps of shriveled orange peels, plum seed sweets.
You cross like a dragon dragging its feet.
Drawn by odors - onions, garlic, ginger minced
like crushed ants
Before you, in the window of Hin Slin Guey,
New Home Restaurant, mustard with skins of
peeling paint,
Are round, creamy, custard
Pies baked golden, splotches brown, flaky with lard
Shaped by pastry cooks, gaunt and lean
To fill your eyes, ready to see.
